Geluwe ,14 October 1914 . A fairly sunny and not too cold day for the time of the year. The Germans did invade Ghent a couple of days ago and they are advancing towards the Yser river, on which on October 18, the legendary Battle of the Yser takes its dramatic beginning. Earlier that day, German troops invaded Geluwe and did setup sentries next to the tram station . It’s a little after 3pm when Captain Grosvenor, officer of the C Squadron , 1 st Life Guards, enters Geluwe. He is informed by some villagers about the German presence . The squadron is split into two groups and the tram station is approached from different positions . The Germans were completely surprised and a hellish firefight that cracks the windows of Gheluwe breaks loose. The Germans have no choice but to retire and do this through the farm of Theofiel Ghesquiere and on the meadows of the Voorhoek , the shortest and best escape route to Menen .

Corporal William Leggett is one of the riders who chase the Germans , but disaster strikes when he is hit by a bullet and collapses on the border between Geluwe and Menen . His horse races on the open fields , William Leggett will never be older than 23 years… After the war he was awarded the British Army Star , British War Medal , Victory Medal and the British Memorial Plaque . His grave was later transferred to the New British Cemetery in Harelbeke , to Block VII , row C , grave 9t

“Goulburn ” is the name of the birthplace of William Leggett , a town in New South Wales , Australia , with 22,000 inhabitants . This golden blonde and malty triple is brewed in honor of and out of respect for William and the many young men who died 100 years ago on the fields of Flanders. Geluwe and its people are grateful and hope about the tragedy of the war they can say: “Never again”.
